Fear of flying
"My first client with fear of flying was a famous athlete. He told me of his numerous flights with panic attacks. He was well known for this in his club.
When I met him for the first session he said: "I need to to leave the country in 5 days. Can you help me?"
My first question was: "Who are you when you are afraid of flying? His answer was: lost
My second question was: "who would you like to be (that you are not) instead of a "lost" person?". "Blessed" he said.
During the "Processing" we reach some desensitization of the fear. Processing activates both parts of the brain by eye movements like in REM sleep phase. Usually we continue to work with what comes up first. this is called "associative chain"
At the end of the first session the "O Ring Test" is stable - its ok for the client, they sometimes cannot believe that yet.
In the second meeting we simulate the time before the flight and the flight itself. Processing is only nessesary if O Ring Test is not stable, which means there is stress.
We simulate the feeling of the fear in the body and locate it there. So we can control exactly when this feeling (fear) is no longer perceived.
The client can usualy fly after 2 sessions.
I recommend this intervention short time before flying.
If another emotion (fear, anger, panic...) is hiding behind the fear of flying, it can take a few more sessions."
"12 year old girl was in treatment for her social fears at a psychologist I am working with. She seemed to have no friends at school. She was sent to me because of her black outs during exams at school.
She is a gifted child. She learnes easily, with almost no effort but she suffers from black out during exams. Then she does not eat, nor sleep and in the end does not want to go to school.
If she goes to school she starts the test but in the middle she complains that she does not remember anything.
in the 1st Session I asked about her fear during exams. The O Ring Test was stable, which means that she wasn't really afraid of the exam. She was actually afraid of disappointing (There was stress behind the word disappointment so we proceeded with that, located the feeling in the body and measured fear of disappointing). During the process we discovered that her disappointment was connected to her brother - a less gifted student who often fails exams.
This example shows the importance of the O Ring Test, we work precisely with where the stress is coming from, that's one of the reasons for the quick change.
In the 2nd session we practiced on the time before the exam, locating the feeling, and proceeding with the test itself.
She successsfully passed the exam without having a black out. now she is using a new connection instead of the black out in her mind".
"When I came to Renate's office in Ramat Aviv she said: "You look great, what can I do for you?" After giving birth to 3 children I tried to lose some 5 kg, but a few months after a successful diet I had 3 kg more than at the beginning. So my answer was: "I want to lose 8 kg". Renate didn't start counting calories or using the scale in the beginning. I was ready for that, because a very good friend of mine succeeded losing weight with her help.
In our meetings I learned to feel and see myself at the target weight. I started to move and behave like a slim person. During our sessions I was told to live like a slim person...........slowly, slowly people around me observed that I ordered smaller and healthier dishes in the restaurant, or that I wanted to walk after the meal. I was not preoccupied with the food or the calories. I started to behave like I was already 8 kg less. Renate explained to me that the brain of a slim person knows automatically how much to eat and how much to move. We trained the brain and not the body. It sounds like magic but it is true. In the beginning I felt a little strange with the homework I had to do but Investing 15 min a day is definitely worth it!"
